FIT FOR A PRINCE - FAVORITE DISHES FROM THE TUNKU’S KITCHEN COOKBOOK

About the Prince and Premier, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, first Prime Minister of the Federation of Malaya. The Prince was born in Alor Star, Kedah and is better known as Bapa Malaysia, the Father of Independence isMalaysia’s beloved first Prime Minister.

Favourite Dishes from the Tunku’s Kitchen, a 168-page Coffee Table cookbook of over 70 private recipes collected, is a fascinating culinary journey comprising traditional, local, and western recipes.  Most importantly this legacy cookbook is Federal Hotels International & The Federal Kuala Lumpur’s tribute and dedication to Malaysia’s beloved first Prime Minister or the "Father of Independence," who once described himself as the “happiest Prime Minister in the world.”

The Federal team mooted the idea to compile this Coffee Table Cookbook in September 2003 to preserve the legacy and well-loved timeless recipes of Tunku’s favorite dishes, where it is hoped that all Malaysians and visitors from abroad may also experience the culinary pleasures of the Royal family.  These dishes are an important part of the Country’s heritage, and for enjoyment of future generations, as many of the recipes and cooking traditions handed down through the generations are fast disappearing so much so that the simple cuisine of childhood times may be forgotten.

This compilation of specially-selected recipes of Tunku’s favourite dishes was done with the collaboration of his daughter, Y.T.M. Tunku Datin Paduka Khadijah and his niece, Y.T.M. Dato’ Mukminah Jiwa.

In 2007, in commemorating the 50th year of Malaysia’s independence, while celebrating The Federal Hotel’s 50 glorious years of Malaysian hospitality, and to pay tribute to Y.T.M. Tunku Abdul Rahman Al Haj, Malaysian Airlines featured a selection of Tunku’s favourite dishes in all classes in selected International routes to Europe (London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome & Stockholm), Australia & New Zealand (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth & Auckland), Regional routes (Bangkok, Siam Reap, Hanoi, Phnom Penh & Denpasar) and as well as Domestic routes, Sabah and Sarawak as part of the Merdeka Inflight Dining Experience with Favourite Dishes from Tunku’s Kitchen on board our Malaysia Airlines flights during this time for our joint 50th Merdeka Celebrations.

It has always been our ultimate goal to bring Favourite Dishes From The Tunku’s Kitchen to the world particularly to all Malaysians as well as international business & leisure travelers visiting Malaysia during our Visit Malaysia Year 2007, as early as the time when we first mooted the idea to compile and to publish Favourite Dishes From The Tunku’s Kitchen cookbook in September 2003.  This cookbook on our beloved first Prime Minister’s favourite private recipes has continued to generate great interest amongst cuisine lovers both at home in Malaysia and abroad, and very encouraging good market demand of our cookbook (in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Australia, United Kingdom, United States of America i.e. some of the Countries where Favourite Dishes from the Tunku’s Kitchen cookbook is being marketed internationally) since its launch of the first English edition on 28 August 2005 and subsequently the Bahasa Malaysia edition of Favourite Dishes from the Tunku’s Kitchen or Hidangan Kegemaran Dari Dapur Tunku, on 28 August 2006.
