Jom Bersih Bukit Bintang 2012 launched by The Mayor of Kuala Lumpur

Planting campaign near Federal Hotels International

Yang Berbahagia Datuk Ahmad Phesal bin Haji Talib, Datuk Bandar Kuala Lumpur (Mayor of Kuala Lumpur) launched the Bukit Bintang Central Gotong Royong themed Jom Bersih Bukit Bintang on Saturday, 10 November 2012 at Plaza Low Yat Boulevard. The objective of this meaningful joint gotong royong is aimed to clean up the Bukit Bintang Cental area and to educate the public at large on the importance of keeping our premises in Bukit Bintang clean.

ABOUT 600 Bukit Bintang stakeholders and representatives from Government Agencies and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) joined forces to clean up the Bukit Bintang area this morning.The Bukit Bintang Central Gotong-Royong was jointly organised by the Bukit Bintang Central Environmental Committee (BBCEC) comprising Hotels, Shopping Complexes, DBKL, Kuala Lumpur Local Agenda 21 (LA21), Jabatan Bomba, Alam Flora, the Hawkers Association Retailers, Food & Beverage Operators. Secondary school students including the students from Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam (YAWA) and PEMADAM Agency also took part in the clean-up operation. An aerobic dance session with live music created from recycled materials lead by the YAWA kids was held before the Gotong-Royong.

Ms Ooi Lee Ping, Director of Marketing, Regional Sales & Business Development said “The Bukit Bintang Central Gotong-Royong is our continuous initiative of our Federal Hotels International (FHI) Group of Hotels namely The Federal Kuala Lumpur and Hotel Capitol Kuala Lumpur together with Plaza Low Yat and BB Park working together with all participating Hotels, Shopping Malls, Retailers and Restaurants, Hawkers Association, Representatives from DBKL, Kuala Lumpur Local Agenda 21 (LA21), Jabatan Bomba, Alam Flora, putting in our joint best efforts to enhance the image of Bukit Bintang, which is a famed tourist, shopping, dining and entertainment belt in Kuala Lumpur. We are always happy to work with the Local Community in our vicinity to preserve the cleanliness and environment here. This continuous joint Bukit Bintang Central Gotong Royong 2012, themed Jom Bersih Bukit Bintang, held for the 24th time, in line with our 1Malaysia spirit, is indeed a testament to the strong camaraderie amongst the local community to maintain a clean working and living environment, to strengthen our community ties as well as develop greater responsibility and great team work. The Gotong-Royong is also a good way to promote the importance of keeping the premises clean. Lending a helping hand is part of our FHI Green Heart campaign, aimed at increasing green awareness, promotes environment conservation and appreciation towards Mother Nature as well as to instill a sense of belonging towards the surrounding environment amongst our Team from Federal Hotels International Group of Hotels namely The Federal Kuala Lumpur and Hotel Capitol Kuala Lumpur. This joint Gotong Royong effort is also in line with the Kuala Lumpur Local Agenda 21 (LA21) to create a healthier, cleaner and better place for quality living.”

This is our 23rd Gotong Royong since 2001. We started with 250 participants and today we have a strong 600 joining efforts contributed from the private as well as the public sectors. Joining us today includes the 80 students from PEMADAM NGO, coming from the constituency of Setia Wangsa” said Mr Simon Leong, Chairman of Bukit Bintang Central Environmental Committee and General Manager of The Federal Kuala Lumpur and Hotel Capitol Kuala Lumpur.

The area of coverage this morning will be led by 3 team leaders namely:

  1. Team Yellow –covers Jalan Tong Shin, Changkat Tong Shin and Jalan Alor led by Mr Leko Beh
  2. Team Green – covers Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Imbi led by Encik Ismail
  3. Team Blue – covers Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Bulan led by Tengku Ferry and Mr Chin.

BBCEC is committed to regularly meet up once a month, with the representatives from LA21, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, Alam Flora to jointly work towards sustainable clean and green environment. BBCEC will continue to organize such gotong royong campaign at least twice a year, with the co-operation and assistance from all parties concerned” said Mr Louis Sebastian, Executive Assistant Manager of Hotel Capitol Kuala Lumpur.

Bukit Bintang Central Environmental Committee launched the 1st Gotong Royong with about 250 participants. As the years go by, more establishments joined in. BBCEC is now 11 years old with accomplishment of total 20 gotong royong since its inception.
